YES, THERE IS A "WORLD MENOPAUSE DAY"!
(Just when you thought you'd heard a "day" for just about everything!)
A day of educational outreach in Laurel, Md. – October 18, 2001
"Whether you're on the way, already there, or have been there/done that"
The World Health Organization estimates that 1.2 billion women will be age 50 or over by the year 2030. "Menopause" can bring with it serious dramatic health implications for women, including increased risk for heart disease, stroke, and osteoporosis, as well as lifestyle changes. Research tells us more than half of women today are uninformed and unprepared to deal with this stage of midlife. The impact upon individuals' lives – women and men – and our communities is undeniable.
October 18 has been observed around the world in countries such as Belgium, Argentina, Australia, Korea, Japan and Spain, at the urging of the International Menopause Society and the North American Menopause Society. For the first time in our region, however, local leaders in women's health care research will present a "World Menopause Day" open house event in Laurel, Md. – a day of educational outreach.
This event is a gift back to the community from Laurel, Md. Based Women's Health Research Center and the Osteoporosis Diagnostic & Monitoring Center, and will mark the WHRC's fifth anniversary.
Women (and men) may attend presentations throughout the day, including "Sex & Menopause" by renowned local physician James A.Simon, M.D., obtain bone density screening for osteoporosis by appointment, and will receive "Menopause Kits" and other give-aways.
Information will be available to attendees about the importance of volunteering for clinical trials to further medical research on emerging new therapies for women's health issues and to obtain medical care for themselves.
